The holiday season has come for the Food Connection, which means that the need is even greater in our community, not just for food, but for a sense of belonging. Here, we try make sure that everyone who comes to the Food Connection not only feels welcome, but knows that they are valuable members of the Food Connection family!
This year, we are focusing on the idea of building a bigger table, inspired by the new mural in our food bank, A Place For Everyone by Jessie Keating. Just like when you and your family gather at your dinner table, the services at the Food Connection are about more than just eating. Hundreds of people including clients, volunteers, and community members come to the Food Connection every day, and we want each person to know that they are valued and needed! This story from the Springbrook Mobile Food Bank, our mobile food bank in Lakewood, shows just how much impact supporters like you are having for your friends and neighbors in need.
A young woman who had been first coming to the mobile food bank as a client with her mother now volunteers with the food bank most weeks. She was able to receive more than food, she found a place to belong. Through our volunteers she received support in her progress toward becoming a naturalized citizen. She graduated from high school this year, and wants to go into fashion or graphic design. She has already explored what classes are available locally, and how the class content fits her personal goals. Along with this, she is also exploring the advantages of joining the National Guard. We should all be proud of assisting in this achievement!
This young woman is one from one of nearly 60,000 households that rely on the the food and community that you’ve helped build at the Food Connection. We hope you’ll continue to support these families in the new year by giving a gift this holiday season. Click below to make your gift today!
